The Hammerwood EP is the debut release of LEFT, a new collaboration formed by Gregorythme and Ariel Garcia. You better keep them in mind, since they will come up with some more fresh stuff like this. The two compulsive knob turners spent hours improvising and manipulating analogue synthesizers and drum machines, the result of it are two powerful tunes with incredible sound quality. The melody in HELL’S HEAT develop itself using very simple elements to build progressively a more and more dropped out psychedelic picture. The title track HAMMERWOOD puts more spin on the percussive side, just until a melodic light helps you to find your way out of it. You’re lucky, it seemed like you could get lost in such a deep tangle of woodish rhythms…

CITYFOX moves on and winds up its first label year with a pretty crazy EP by Zurich’s hottest new talent ANDRI. Dive into his funky, weird, psychedelic world while listening to the seven tracks. They all feature ANDRI’s unique groove, sound and vocal signature. And still, each one of them has its own character: Be it the straight forwardness in THE CHANGE, the cool groove of FEEL IN LOVE WITH UUU, the catchy funky vox in HOUSERS REVENGE or the hit machine TSCHEGE.

Three exclusive digital tracks come along in addition to the vinyl release – simply because ANDRI’s output is too big and too good to keep it back from you. With the madness of EDDING 2000, the extraterrestrial SPACERS CASE and the techno bomb MY JAZZ these three tracks could form a complete record themselves.

Gregorythme’s bio claims he is not a tool-maker. The producer’s Futurama EP seems to provide ample evidence for this claim, despite what you might think of his ultra-tracky work as one-half of Digitaline. Gregory Poncet, as his parents call him, provides concrete compositions here: “Futurama” has a remarkably clean lead melody that would sound tired if it didn’t bounce with so much warmth. Full of optimism, it leads neatly into “Summer,” which has the same sort of Olympian feel, but gives it a hint of funk to keep it from sounding too sanitized. “Walking on Balls,” meanwhile slides a creaking acoustic sample of what might be a rocking chair grinding into the floor—or someone walking on balls—as Tigerlily sings a haltingly beautiful tune.

Each track here is defined by two things: cleanliness—balls aside—and their song structure. Gregorythme’s downtempo house here is built for the warm-up or the come-down. Unconcerned with fitting in with anything other than itself, it’s remarkably reminiscent of “a 1970’s idea of the soundtrack to the future,” as Lee Jones put it in his DJ feedback. Barem and Kabale und Liebe & Julien Chaptal arrive for remix duty, taking “Summer” into their own hands. Barem only slightly refits the tune, making it a tad darker and focusing things squarely on a descending synth line, while the Amsterdam duo find the club bounce hidden in the original. Both are nice enough, but this EP is clearly all about Gregorythme, and he steals the show.

lee jones made a real masterpiece for cityfox. especially the title track yoyo is so full of melancholy and emotion, that you won’t forget this song for a long time. after futurama from gregorythme again this is timeless music, composed for the eternity!

…but there is some magic on the flip, too.

closed circus is the perfect name for the b-side track. you almost can see the deserted lonesome circus. the rusty gate squeaks in the wind and just the old chained elephant is still there because he can’t walk anymore. he plays the trumpet for nobody… the clown is gone since a long time, he is a caretaker now.

there is also a story about burglarized. the file of this track was stolen with lee’s laptop a while ago, so it never got it’s fine-tuning. but exactly this rawness is what makes it so special! with it’s simplicity and it’s catchy bassline it already has two main components of the hit formula and will be heard on many main dancefloors for sure!

after a short summer break cityfox is back with it’s 3rd release. gregorythme, who already released the last record as one part of digitaline, shows us again his masterskillz on the synthesizer. the result of the close relationship to his hardware is the futurama ep. the title track indeed sounds very futuristic, maybe retro-futuristic to quote lee jones:

“it sounds like a 1970’s idea of the soundtrack to the future. this would be the easy listening music piped into every monorail in the future cities.”

“summmer” on the flip is gregory’s soundtrack to review the summer season, imagine a real hot summer day with far too much sun, maybe with a cocktail at the beach… perfect to find 2 “hot” remixers for – kabale und liebe made his interpretation together with his mate julien chaptal, and what else could we expect – they made a driving club smasher out of it and barem turned the original into a pumpy hypnotic track with his distinctive signature.

“walking on balls” featuring the vocals of tigerlily is another laid back track to complete this round ep and make it a perfect next step for cityfox! watch out, a lot more is coming up this year!
